MONROE - Green County traffic fatalities in 2009 increased over the year before, but still remained below average.

In 2009 there were four traffic fatalities, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said, which was two more than in 2002.

Roderick keeps statistics for traffic fatalities back to 1988. Over the past 22 years, the county averaged seven fatalities.

There have been 41 fatalities in Green County since 2004.

In 2005 and 2006, Green County had 10 and 13 fatalities, respectively. The 13 fatalities in 2006 were the highest number since Roderick began collecting the data.

In both years, there were two crashes with multiple fatalities, he said.

Roderick can't say for certain why the number of fatalities has declined but he said he's happy to see the number decline, he said.

Green County's decline in fatalities is reflective of the number of traffic deaths across the state, according to the Associated Press.

In 2009, Wisconsin had 545 traffic deaths, the lowest number of deaths since 1944, when 526 people died.

Over the past five years, an average of 676 people have died annually on Wisconsin's roads.
