MONROE - A Soil Sisters Farm Tour Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. The tour will visit small family farms led by women committed to local agriculture.
"According to the last U.S. Census of Agriculture, women-owned farms increased 30 percent, making women farmers one of the fastest growing groups of new growers," said Lisa Kivirist, director of the Rural Women's Project. "Soil Sisters highlights a cross-section of inspiring women farmers in south central Wisconsin prioritizing small-scale, diversified, community-focused agriculture."
The Rural Women's Project is a venture of the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) supporting women farmers.
The participating women farmers include:
- Kriss Marion, Circle M Farm, Blanchardville.
- Lori Stern and LeAnn Powers, Lucky Dog Farmstay, New Glarus.
- Lindsey Morris Carpenter and Gail Carpenter, Grassroots Farm, Monroe.
- Lisa Kivirist, Inn Serendipity, Browntown.
- Joylene Reavis, Sugar Maple Emu Farm, Brodhead.
- Suellen Thomson-Link, Kinkoona Farm, Brodhead.
- Dela Ends, Scotch Hill Farm, Brodhead.
Tours and activities are free and will take place rain or shine. Farms will have various homegrown items for sale. No pre-registration is needed.
