MONROE - An informational meeting on dealing with the 2012 drought for Green County and area farmers will be held Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Monroe United Methodist Church, 2227 4th St.
The meeting will run from 11 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m. with a free lunch provided by United Methodist Church for all participants. Registration with the Green County University of Wisconsin-Extension office is needed by Wednesday, Aug. 14 to establish a meal count.
Presenters at the meeting will include Teresa Zimmer, Green County FSA director, who will give an overview of current federal disaster programs available to farmers. Roger Williams will be the luncheon speaker and will discuss strategies on staying up in a down economy.
Mark Mayer, UWEX agriculture agent, will discuss management practices for dealing with drought-stressed corn. Heather Gould, risk management specialist with Badgerland Financial, will discuss current crop insurance programs.
UWEX, in cooperation with Agri-King, will also be conducting a Corn Silage Dry Down Testing Day as part of the meeting. UWEX will have a portable testing unit on site to test freshly chopped corn for dry matter content and Agri-King Labs will test samples brought in for nitrates. Both tests will be offered free on all samples brought in that day.
Farmers can drop off corn samples in the church parking lot between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Samples can either be a quart-sized container of freshly chopped silage or four to five whole corn plants cut 6 inches above the ground. Corn silage samples must be fresh and not left in the sun or a hot vehicle for any extended time before they are brought to the testing site as this will result in less accurate test results.
For more information or to register, contact the UWEX at (608) 328-9440.
