MONROE — Police recently announced that a convicted sex offender has moved into an apartment Tuesday in Monroe in the 1300 block of 17th Street. 

Matthew Wayne Schmid, 38, will be living at 1317 17th Street. A white male, Schmid is just over 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He was found guilty in December 1997 on a Class BC felony of 2nd degree sexual assault of a child and a Class D felony of 3rd degree sexual assault. 

Schmid is a lifetime registrant of the state Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registry. 

In 2015, Schmid was found guilty of a Class H felony charge of strangulation and suffocation and a misdemeanor domestic abuse charge. He has also been convicted of battery, theft and making threatening phone calls. 

According to a release by the police, Schmid is not wanted by the police and has served his sentence. Authorities advised that the information should not be abused to intimidate or harass registered sex offenders.
