PLATTEVILLE — Two rounds of severe weather caused power blackouts and damage last week.

The first storms Wednesday morning resulted in blackouts in downtown Platteville and on Platteville’s east side, including stoplights along South Water Street, and downed trees in some areas.

The storms ushered in heat and humidity that resulted in a heat advisory for the area Thursday afternoon and evening.

The bigger round of weather was Friday afternoon and evening, with tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings followed by flash flood warnings in Lafayette and Iowa counties.

Tornado warnings were issued for northwestern and then southwestern Lafayette County for two storms with rotation, one over Platteville and another over Benton. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for storms that moved from central Grant County into Lafayette and Iowa counties.

The Platteville storm produced two-inch hail on Platteville’s east side and east of Platteville and high winds that toppled trees at Platteville Golf & Country Club and on the east side of Legion Park. Corn was pushed down in some fields on Lafayette County XX between Platteville and Belmont. Trees were blown down in Lancaster, including one on the Grant County Courthouse square.

A flash flood warning was issued into early Saturday for Lafayette and southwestern Iowa counties.

National Weather Service-reported rainfall amounts included 1.6 inches in Darlington, 1.28 inches in Benton, 0.92 inches east-southeast of Blanchardville, 0.91 inches in Lone Rock, 0.84 inches in Argyle, 0.79 inches in Platteville and 0.66 inches in Lancaster.

The NWS’ weather station at Platteville Municipal Airport reported 1.48 inches of rain last week. That helped but did not ameliorate the drought conditions that the Midwest Drought Monitor terms “extreme” in northeastern Grant County, extreme northern Lafayette County, northern Green County, all of Iowa and Richland counties and eastern Crawford and Vernon counties.
