BELLEVILLE — Crews continued cleaning up and an investigation is ongoing after a semi tractor-trailer truck plowed into a family home here.

The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4 along the 400 block of North Harrison Street, where the truck crossed the centerline on Main Street, ran over a yard and entered the home. According to published reports, the truck was owned by DNBT Trucking of Gratiot.

Two people inside the home were slightly injured and taken to area hospitals as a precaution but those injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to officials. The driver of the semi was not seriously injured, officials said, and a family dog was also able to escape.

The driver was able to escape the wreckage under his own power but was taken to UW Hospital.

The cab of the truck nearly disappeared inside the structure, with the kitchen sustaining much of the damage. Leaking fuel also was discovered inside, further complicating the cleanup. A gas meter also was damaged but crews were able to cut gas to the building in short order.

According to officials, a number of agencies north of the Green/Dane County line responded, among them: Agencies that assisted in the response include the Madison Fire Department Heavy Urban Rescue Team, We Energies, Alliant Energy, the Wisconsin State Patrol and Belleville Public Works Department. A recovery team also was called in to pull the semi out of the interior of the from the house.

Authorities were on scene for more than four hours. Traffic was shut down on the street until the scene was cleared.

Authorities said the structural integrity of the home remained intact.

The driver, a 67-year-old, was headed to Cambridge to pick up a grian load. The trailer was empty at the time of the accident. The same driver was cited for speeding in a company truck in July 2020, according to court records.
