School board approves November choir trip to New York

MONROE - The Monroe School Board Monday approved a Monroe High School Choir trip to New York this fall.

The high school choir will make the trip to New York Nov. 24-28 after receiving an invitation from MidAmerica Productions. MidAmerica Productions has provided 1,000 concerts nationwide, with more than 600 being in New York's historic Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall.

Composer/conductor John Rutter will direct one combined chorus Sunday, Nov. 27 in the Christmas portion of Handel's "Messiah" and another chorus performing a selection of his own Christmas music and carols at Carnegie Hall.

The five-day, four-night trip will include rehearsals, an after-concert cruise to view the Statue of Liberty and free time in the city.

In other action, the board:

n Approved the Monroe High School softball team's spring trip to Disney World's Softball Spring Training in Orlando, Fla. April 1-6. There, the Cheesemakers will be able to practice in good weather and play games against teams nationwide. The team is raising half the $975 cost per player and coach for the trip and players are paying the other half.

n Approved the support staff hiring of Tricia Barker as a Parkside Elementary School educational assistant and hired Kathy Stilson as a cafeteria worker at Northside School.

n Approved the support staff transfer of Rhonda Stagliano from Monroe High School cook to a cafeteria worker at Parkside School.

n Approved the resignation of Laura Frontz as a custodian at the high school.

n Accepted the $3,000 contribution from the Monroe Optimist for enhancing writing instruction in all elementary schools; approved a donation of school supplies from Grande Cheese Company; and a $300 donation from the Salvation Army of Green County for middle school student assistance. It also approved a $250 award from the Griffith Foundation for classroom materials at the high school.
