NEW GLARUS — The community of New Glarus came together Thursday, Sept. 19 at Candy Cane Park to celebrate the opening of a new inclusive playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and potluck dinner. Over 60 residents and key supporters attended the event, which marked the completion of a year-long effort to create a play space accessible to children of all ages and abilities.
The playground, which cost nearly $215,000, was funded through contributions from various sources, including the Village of New Glarus, an anonymous non-profit foundation’s matching grant, and generous donations from organizations such as Only In Wisconsin Giving, The Bank of New Glarus, Colony Brands, and Grace Church. Funds were also raised at the World Euchre Championship, hosted by New Glarus Cares.
“This playground is a reflection of what can be achieved when our community comes together,” said Shelly Johnson, President of New Glarus Cares.
Children excitedly explored the playground’s accessible features, highlighting the joy the new space will bring to families for years to come. Local volunteers and donors were recognized for their dedication to the project, with many working through sweltering summer heat to ensure its completion.
“It’s a true partnership between the village, local businesses, and residents that made this project possible,” said Lauren Freeman, Village Administrator.
Candy Cane Park’s new inclusive playground is set to become a cherished gathering spot for all, embodying the community spirit that helped bring it to life.
