More work planned for Lincoln Park Water Tower

MONROE - In 2005, members of the Green County Historical Society helped save the Lincoln Park Water Tower.

They raised nearly $10,000 to replace the deteriorating front door and several rotting windows, install glass and wire to keep the birds out, tuck-point the tower walls, replace the crumbling stoop and install a donated handrail. With the balance of their funds and the help of the City of Monroe, the tank was repainted in 2010.

It soon may be possible for citizens to see the inside of the water tower. The water tower committee hopes to open the tower periodically to showcase the spiral staircase inside and describe to school children the purpose of a tower and its importance to a community like Monroe and cities, towns and villages across the country.

Currently, the group has solicited bids for three projects under Phase II; the hope is to raise $4000 and to apply for matching funds from the Monroe Fund in April for work to begin this summer. Phase II includes a permanent repair to the skirt at the base of the tower, power washing bird droppings on the inside and cementing the dirt floor. A later Phase III will install electricity.

Before she died at age 97, Inez Goecks funded playing cards for $7 per deck to replenish the water tower account. A few decks still remain for sale at $7. With this seed money, CGHS is seeking donations to begin Phase II. Any checks donated for water tower restoration should be made out to Green County Historical Society with "Water Tower" noted on the memo line, as funds for the tower are kept in a separate water tower preservation account. Donations should be mailed to Green County Historical Society, P.O. Box 804, Monroe, WI 53566. All contributions are fully tax-deductible.

Any questions regarding this project or to purchase playing cards may be made to water tower committee co-chairs Donna Glynn at 608-325-5351 or Christie Strait at 608-328-4301.
