MONROE - At a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

- Opened quotes for 2012 forestry work. Whitney Tree Service was the only contractor to submit a bid. It recommended to the council to hire Whitney Tree Service, under a two-year contract.

- Approved bills from Fehr-Graham and Associates for $820 for pond dredging and $2,820 for detention pond certification study; and Veolia for $2,200 for December recycling.

- Recommended to the council to approve up to $47,000 to rehabilitate well No. 6, near the high school.

- Approved advertising for bids to dredge a detention off Haddinger Road, near the Monroe County Club. The pond is part of the city's Department of Natural Resources Master Plan for controlling run -off water. The pond is supposed to be 7 feet deep, but sediment has reduce the depth to 4 feet. The pond was last dredged 15 years ago. The pond holds runoff from about 140 acres, about 75 percent of which is from the city, according to Al Gerber, city engineering supervisor. Gerber said the project cost is estimated at about $120,000, partly because of DNR requirements to use dredging bags. The bags hold the sediment pulled off the pond and allows the water to seep out. The remaining sediment will be used by the cemetery for top soil.

- Discussed shared use and maintenance costs of the country club pond. No action was taken. City Attorney Rex Ewald will draft an agreement between the city and county club for use of the pond, to be reviewed at a later meeting.

- Recommended to hire Fehr-Graham and Associates for a soil contamination assessment in the 700 block of 8th Street. The DNR is requiring a complete soil assessment of the area, where a 560-gallon fuel tank was removed in the city right-of-way last summer.
