MONROE - During a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Approved for payment, bills in the amount of $2,182.55 from Willet, Hoffman & Associates for 30th Street detention basin; $9,681.61 (after recovering cost to Monroe Fire Department for damaged gas line) from Iowa Grant Trucking for 16th Avenue construction; $366 from Fehr-Graham and Associates for 16th Avenue Sewer improvement project and $2,649.25 from Fehr-Graham for engineering on water system improvement project.

• Authorized Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch to seek bids for the MERIT Center training tower. The cost of the tower is funded by donations collected for the project.

• Accepted a quote from and recommended the council hire Whitney Tree Service, Monroe, for forestry work. Whitney was the only quote submitted. The quote included tree cutting, $17.75 per inch diameter; stump removal, $457 per inch diameter, stump removal, $100 per hour; tree trimming, $131.50 per hour on city property and $240 per hour on private property. Park Supervisor Paul Klinzing said the quote was slightly lower than last year. He said the business has insurance but was not asked for a performance bond this year, which may have contributed to the lower quote.

• Authorized Klinzing to obtain quotes for a replacement vehicle for a 1993 Ford 4WD pickup. The replacement vehicle was budgeted in the 2009 budget with funds in the Parks capital account. Board members asked about delaying the purchase until the model changeover in August or September. Klinzing said the current vehicle is "in pretty decent shape."
