MONROE - There is no more room at the pub.
The Saint Patrick's Celtic Pub Crawl, scheduled for Saturday, already has about 700 people registered, over 200 more than last year's event, and because of the tremendous interest reservations for the event are no longer being taken, event organizer Tracy Hamilton said.
"This year is going to bigger and badder," Hamilton said, jokingly. "We've got people coming from Illinois and Iowa. It's really grown."
Two years ago, 180 people took part in the event. Last year, about 475 took part.
The crawl begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Friendly Inn. Participants will be able to visit seven pubs in Monroe including, Friendly Inn, Old Smokey, Doyle's Irish Pub, Turner Hall, French Quarter, Bartel's and Co. Tap, and Flanagan's Shenanigans. Check-in time for the event is 11:30 a.m. at Friendly Inn.
For $25, people receive a free drink at all the pubs and a long-sleeve T-shirt. The first 250 people who bring a non-perishable food item for the Green County Food Pantry will receive a free bottle coozie, Hamilton said. He encourages everyone to bring an item for the food pantry, he said. In addition, organizers of the crawl plan to donate $500 to the Monroe Theatre Guild.
A two-piece Irish band will perform at Friendly Inn as people check in, Hamilton said.
People are encouraged to have a designated driver.
The Pub Crawl is just one of the events in Monroe to celebrate the Irish holiday.
The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade is scheduled for 5:17 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, around Monroe's Square.
