MONROE - The 26-year-old Monroe man who held police in a two-hour standoff Sunday morning, Oct. 26, has been identified as James L. Cowell.
Cowell was jailed Sunday on charges of disorderly conduct and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. The charges are not yet filed in Green County Circuit Court and no court date is set.
The two-hour standoff occurred after police responded to several calls from Cowell's wife at their residence in the 2300 block of 16th Avenue early Sunday morning, according to Chief of Police Fred Kelley.
At 3 a.m., she reported her husband had locked her out of the house. After police arrived, she got in through a window and didn't find him inside, Kelley said.
Police left but were called again to the home at about 4:20 a.m. and found that Cowell had locked himself in the garage.
While checking the yard, police found Jason K. Coy, 25, Monroe, hiding by the porch and determined he'd been drinking, in violation of a bond condition. He was jailed.
Police left but were called back again shortly after 7 a.m. for a report that Cowell was threatening his wife and two female companions with a pistol. The three women fled the house, while Cowell refused to come out.
After two hours and several "extended phone calls" with police, Cowell surrendered without incident at 9:09 a.m., Kelley said.
No shots were fired and no injuries reported.
State court records show Cowell's criminal record in Green County includes a conviction of carrying a concealed weapon.
