Main Street nominees receive recognition

MONROE - Monroe Main Street received notice March 11 that four of its program nominees have been selected for state recognition at the Wisconsin Main Street 20th Annual Awards banquet, April 23.

State Commerce Secretary Richard J. Leinenkugel will make the 2009 presentations recognizing the best projects and volunteers from the 36 Wisconsin Main Street Communities at a reception and buffet dinner at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo.

Main Street directors submit up to 10 nominations to the state each year.

"I am extremely proud to be able to - across the board - nominate 10, in good faith and with confidence. Many (Main Street) programs can't come up with 10," Monroe Main Street Director Barb Nelson said.

Monroe Main Street also will be recognized for its fifth year of service. Monroe began its Main Street program in 2005.

Holding the awards event at the Circus World Museum this year is itself a Wisconsin Main Street Economic Development project, Nelson said.

Trouble in the economy has been a hindrance to the museum's pavilion.

"The state got wind of that and decided to hold the awards event at the pavilion to help them get it established and used for more than just the museum," she said.

Monroe Main Street nominations submitted for 2009 include,

• Best Volunteer Project: Recognition and Recruitment Breakfast, Diane Phillips

• Best Downtown Retail Event: Truck'n Downtown, Marilyn Pfarr

• Best Promotional Item: Www.MonroeMainStreet.Org, Richard Grahn

• Best Facade Rehabilitation under $7,500: Sequel's Fine Interior Consignments, Rosemary Forcade

• Best Facade Rehabilitation over $7,500: Century 21 Realty, Bub Zwygart

• 2009 Volunteer of the Year, Tom Miller

• 2009 Wisconsin Main Street Honorary Board of Directors: Dan Henke

Monroe Main Street brought home three awards last year for Board Member of the Year, Ryan Wilson; Volunteer of the Year, Karen Stollenwork; and Best Facade Improvement under $7,500, Scott Patterson.

Project nominations are judged by individuals outside of the Wisconsin Main Street program, who have expertise in the nomination area.
