This aerial photograph shows what the Green County Poor Farm and Insane Asylum looked like early in the 1900s. Some of these buildings still exist in the present Pleasant View complex. The original poor farm was located on 130 acres in Mount Pleasant Township purchased in 1861. That farm was sold in 1878. The following year, the
county purchased 320 acres in Monroe Township at the current site. The annual report of 1897 showed there were 30 males and 13 females in the pauper department and 33 males and 31 females in the insane asylum. Seven
people had died in the facility that year. Some of them may have been buried at the Poor Farm Cemetery on the grounds. Green County Historical Society collects photographs and information on all parts of Green County, with an emphasis on the Monroe area. Questions and remarks may be sent to Matt Figi at 608-325-6503 or mfigi48@tds.net.
