MONROE - Last week, Green County experienced significant flooding. To help, there are free cleanup kits available at the Green County Health Department and the Green County Sheriff's Office.

The kit includes a bucket, bleach, scrub brushes and rubber gloves. Cleanup kits have been donated to the county by the American Red Cross.

If you have had water in your basement or any other damage associated with the storms that began on July 19, call Green County Emergency Management at 608-328-9470 or 608-328-9416 to report your damages.

Guidelines from the Green County Health Department include:

Basements

If your basement is flooded with standing water, gradually release 2 to 3 inches per day. By doing this, you will decrease your chances of having the basement floor and walls crack and collapse.

Once you have all of the standing water removed from the basement, check that all electrical hazards have been removed - if you have concerns, contact a building inspector or the utility company.

Damaged or wet flooring, carpeting, furniture, drywall, insulation, books and children's stuffed animals, among other things, should be removed and disposed of to prevent mold growth.

Keep watching for any sewage backup. Avoid water containing human waste. Thoroughly clean areas where the sewage has been.

Cleaning and mold

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask, which is available at a hardware store. Once the damaged material inside the house has been removed, use a solution of 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water to thoroughly clean all surfaces touched by flood waters as well as any exhibiting signs of mold.

Note: Never mix products containing ammonia - which can be found in many cleaners - with bleach, as a harmful gas will form and can cause serious injury.

Private well and drinking water

If your private well has flooded, assume it is contaminated. Take the following steps:

• Check the water for cloudiness, color or an unusual smell

• Find alternative sources of water or use bottled water

• Properly disinfect the private well

• Test water after disinfecting

The Green County Health Department has well-water testing kits available. Call 608-328-9390 or visit www.greencountyhealth.org for more information.
