Explosive scare in Browntown closes street

MONROE — Green County authorities called in the Dane County Bomb Squad Wednesday to deal with material at a Browntown construction site that appeared to look like old sticks of either dynamite or possibly, road flares.

The incident unfolded on Aug. 2, 2023, just after 10:40 a.m., when a construction crew found eight paper wrapped cylindrical items “having the appearance of very old and abandoned commercially produced dynamite sticks or road flares,” the Green County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The items were found while crews were working on the wall of a home under construction in the 300 block of E. Main Street.

Green County Deputies and the Browntown Fire Department responded, closed the street, and asked nearby citizens to “temporarily relocate” for safety reasons.

Assistance from the Dane County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was requested.

“Poor material condition of the items made it difficult to determine their exact composition,” said the statement, without elaborating on whether the material was later deemed to be dangerous.

Once the material was removed, just after 2:15 p.m., the area was reopened, officials said.
