MONROE - The downtown project to fill the old coal vault openings under the sidewalks is well underway, with many business and building owners impressed with the work of the contractor, Irvin & Dave Klapper, according to Fehr-Graham & Associates, the project engineer.
Some building basements still had access to the coal vaults and needed enclosing before the coal bins could be filled. The project is in preparation for the new Downtown Square reconstruction to take place this year.
Fehr-Graham & Associates has received many positive comments from business owners, said Tom Purdy, Community Planner.
One business owner, Judi Henke of The Green Door, said the contractor has done an outstanding job and left their basement in a cleaner state than when they began.
Matt Campbell, the engineer overseeing this phase of the project, noted the benefit of beginning this phase now is that it will allow the above-ground work this spring to proceed faster and reduce the time the contractor will need to be in front of each business.
Under coordination of Monroe Main Street, Monroe city staff, and Fehr-Graham, the downtown redevelopment project has begun with smooth and rapid progress, Purdy said.
