Calling Fourth Ward...

Any Fourth Ward resident interested in assuming the alderman seat on the Monroe Common Council for a period of about one year can contact City Clerk Carol Stamm by May 1. She can be reached by phone at 329-2530, by email at cstamm@cityofmonroe.org or in person at City Hall during business hours.

MONROE - The City of Monroe is still seeking to fill a seat on its Common Council.

The city issued a statement Tuesday, April 23 asking any Fourth Ward resident interested in being alderman for one year to contact City Clerk Carol Stamm by Wednesday, May 1.

The Fourth Ward is located in southcentral Monroe, from 16th Street south to the high school and bordered by 11th and 17th avenues.

The Common Council will appoint the successor at an upcoming meeting, for a term to run until April 2014. Another election for this seat will be held next spring for a 1-year term.

At a meeting Monday, April 22, the council voted unanimously to announce the opening, after Mayor Bill Ross and Council President Michael Boyce were unsuccessful in finding a write-in candidate interested in the position.

"So far, every (write-in candidate) has declined. One person has not called back," Stamm said Tuesday.

No one ran for the position in the April 2 election, but eight people received write-in votes. Eric Wild and Jerry Guth each received two write-in votes; Wild was declared the winner of the seat after a draw of the hat. The vacancy was created when Wild later declined the position because of the conflict with his current employment with the City of Monroe.
