VERONA/NEW GLARUS - William Conrad Lueschow, age 96 of New Glarus, died on Thursday, January 8, 2009, at the New Glarus Home.
He was born February 7, 1912 to Otto and Alma (Johnson) Lueschow in the Town of Wien, Marathon County, Wisconsin. He attended rural schools for his elementary school education; later attending high school in Edgar, WI graduating in 1930. In September of that year, he entered a one year program at Marathon County Normal School. While a student teaching in Wausau Elementary School, he had Elroy Hirsh as one of his students in the fifth grade. He taught country school in Marathon County from 1931 through May of 1938.
He married Alice Boucher on May 8, 1933. Bill and Alice traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Japan. She has preceded him in death. After summer sessions and night school Bill earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Stevens Point State Teacher's College. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Public School Administration from the University of Wisconsin in 1945. Bill continued in the field of elementary education, teaching and principalships at Eldron, Gilman, and Benton, WI from 1938 through 1953. In 1953, he came to Verona, WI and taught eighth grade as well as being the principal until the spring of 1958. At that time he accepted an appointment as an Agricultural Specialist with the Dept. of Agriculture in Madison, WI. He served as State Bee Inspector and Deputy Administrator for the Plant Industry Division until 1977. In Bill's retirement he served as a driver for EMS of Verona and distributed meals on wheels to local shut-inns. Bill was an avid reader and enjoyed many social outings such as square dancing, round dancing and bowling. He attended all of the home Badger Football games at Camp Randall in Madison for many years.
He was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Verona, WI.
He is survived by a son: Lloyd (Shirley) Lueschow of New Glarus; a daughter: Sandra (Karl) Oliver of Neenah; 5 grandchildren: Karlene (Jerry) Clunie, Christine (Brett) Armstrong, Kevin (Sarah) Lueschow, Karen Lueschow, Karl (Kristin) Lueschow; 8 great-grandchildren: Alicia, Matt and Aaron Armstrong, Shiloh, Jesse, Drew, Tyler and Brock Lueschow; 2 brothers-in-law: Ed (Bernice) Boucher of Stevens Point, Art (Elaine) Boucher of Marshfield; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Alice, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Roy (Arlene), Lyle (Edna), Otto, Jr. (Verena) and Donald; and a sister-in-law: Margaret Lueschow.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Salem United Church of Christ, 502 Mark Dr., Verona, WI with the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Yurs officiating. Burial will be at the Verona Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 10:55 a.m. on Saturday at the Salem United Church of Christ.
We all will miss his wisdom and guidance and especially his always quick and ready sense of humor.
