Virgil L. Elmer, age 84 of Monroe, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe. Virgil was born November 25, 1924 in Monroe, the son of Henry H. and Ethel (Green) Elmer.
He attended Lincoln Grade School and Monroe High School before serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 until 1946.
After returning from the service Virgil married Shirley Ethridge in 1948.
He was employed at General Motors in Janesville before retiring in 1976 with 30 years of service. Following his retirement he worked at Windy Acres Golf Course and the Swiss Colony.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley Elmer of Monroe; two daughters, Ann (Al) Patchen of Albany and Jane (Steve Vanko) Elmer of Madison; four brothers, Morris (Gerda) Elmer of Madison, Clarence (Grace) Elmer of Janesville, Loren (Lu) Elmer, and Curtis (Nancy) Elmer, all of Monroe; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Elmer of Rock City, IL; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lee, Ralph, and Rodney Elmer; and a sister, Dorothy Camron.
A private celebration of Virgil's life will be held at a later date.
