ARGYLE/MADISON - Vernon D. Harris, age 88, of Argyle, formerly of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2012. He was born on Oct. 12, 1923, in Dodgeville, the son of Lott and Ida (Dammen) Harris. Vernon was a private 1st class in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II serving from 1942 until 1945. He fought in the Invasion of Normandy as well as numerous other battles. Vernon was employed as a laborer for Oscar Mayer for 24 years and as custodian for the Eastside Businessman's Club for over 31 years where he was also a member. He belonged to VFW Post #7591.
Vernon is survived by his sons; David (Julie), Steve (Gloria), Gary, Bob (Teri), Vernon (Jo), and Rocky (Cathy) Roberts; 26 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Averill Harris, and brother-in-law, Roger Gilbertson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Marcus; two sisters, Betty Gilbertson and Olivine Shepherd; and daughter, Sherry Harris.
Funeral services for Vernon will be held at BLANCHARDVILLE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 305 Madison St., Blanchardville, at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2012, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Monroe Clinic Hospice, 515 22nd Ave., Monroe, WI 53566.
