GRATIOT TOWNSHIP - A Darlington teen was cited for driving while intoxicated following a crash that sent him and four other people to the hospital with injuries late Saturday, Nov. 2.
Mario A. Rios-Amayo, 16, was also cited for driving as a permittee without an instructor in the car.
Rios-Amayo was westbound on Wis. 11 in Gratiot Township at about 11 p.m. when he rearended another westbound vehicle, according to a news release from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.
The other driver, Thomas J. Wonders, 62, Darlington, sustained minor injuries, as did his passengers Rhonda E. Wonders, 61, Stanley E. Krahenbuhl, 60, and Mary R. Krahenbuhl, 55, all of Darlington. They were taken to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County.
Rios-Amayo was seriously injured and transferred by ambulance from Memorial Hospital to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
Both vehicles were severely damaged and towed.
Rural Medical Ambulance, the Gratiot Fire Department and Gratiot First Response assisted deputies at the scene.
