MONROE - Stanley "Tink" Hayes, age 92, formerly of Freeport and Pecatonica, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe. He was born on September 2, 1917 in McConnell, IL, the son of Ralph Eugene and Anna Eve (Marshall) Hayes. For many years, Stanley was a self-employed contractor and later worked as a mechanic. After retiring, Stanley formed "Country Canoe," a Rockford-based canoe rental company, and ran the business for 20 years.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport, and served as Scoutmaster of the church's Boy Scout Troop 19, continuing in that capacity for over thirty years. He was a recipient of the scout's Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver awards. He also served as a Red Cross First Aid Instructor at Highland Community College for many years.

Stanley is survived by three children: Kathleen Wright of Rockford, IL, Roger (Lonnie) Hayes of Carlyle, IL, and John (Annette) Hayes of Louisa, VA; a sister, Lucille Hoefle of Elmhurst, IL; six grandchildren: Scott Wright, London KY, Michelle Keffer, Rockford, IL, Casey Hayes, Los Angeles, CA, Chad Hayes, Highland, IL, Zachary Hayes of Clarksville, TN; and Adam Hayes of Rockford, IL. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and mother of his children, Mary J. (Marler) Hayes-Wilson; two brothers, Burdette and Malvin "Hans" Hayes; three sisters, Florence Gundrey, Gertrude Stees, and Ruth Kaiser; and by a great-granddaughter, J. Madison Wright Morris.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 1440 Walnut in Freeport, on Saturday, April 10, 2010 with Stanley's grandson, Pastor Scott Wright, officiating. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given in Stanley's name payable to Canyon Camp (Canyon Camp, B.S.A., Blackhawk Area Council, B.S.A., 1800 7th Ave. Rockford, IL 61110). The Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
