The Green County Sheriff's Department's K-9 Grischa retired at the end of his shift on Friday, May 25 after more than eight years of service. Grischa, a 9 1/2-year-old male German Shepherd, will now become the property of and live with his handler, Deputy Charlie Worm.

Grischa is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, building searches and handler protection. In 2012 alone, Grischa and Worm have been responsible for seizing about 2 pounds of marijuana, 1/2 gram of heroin, about 21 grams of methamphetamine and ecstasy and $16,476 in cash. They have assisted in three school searches and have given four demonstrations to community groups.

Deputy Cody Kanable has been named as the department's next handler and will be traveling to Iowa to train with the department's new German Shepherd. The sheriff's department expects the new K-9 officer to be deployed later this summer.
