BRODHEAD - Sam Stoneback, age 90, of Brodhead, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the Monroe Clinic Hospital, Monroe. He was born on March 14, 1918 in Washburn County, WI, the son of Frank and Ella (Whitehead) Stoneback. His first marriage was to Helen Kuhl on January 26, 1938. She passed away on March 6, 1969. He then married Ruby (Meinert) Clark on October 9, 1971. She passed away on September 21, 2000.

Sam had farmed for many years, worked for the railroad for eight years, and Knight Mfg. of Brodhead for 21 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Brodhead.

Sam is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Charles) Christman, Brodhead; three step-sons, Darrell (Eunice) Clark, Albany, Roger Clark, Monticello, Dennis (Sharon) Clark, Monroe; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Leila Godfrey, Corvallis, MT; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, two brothers, Henry and Ben Stoneback, sisters, Dorothy Moore and Irene Deremo, granddaughters, Lori Christman and Ann Clark, and a grandson, David Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, Brodhead, with Rev. Steve Groves officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, October 31, 2008, at the D. L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, and 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. A memorial fund will be established.
