Ruth J. Meier, age 89 of Monroe, formerly of South Wayne, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. She was born on August 6, 1924 in Gratiot Township, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Wick) Burkhalter. Ruth and Clarence E. Meier were married on February 5, 1945. She farmed with her husband in the South Wayne area for many years, she also worked at the Swanson Nursing Home in South Wayne, the Swiss Colony and worked with the LaFayette County Commission on Aging. Ruth was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, being past president and officer of the Church's Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her children, Larry (Patti) Meier of Evansville, Gene Meier of Monroe, Robert (Sue) Meier of rural Monroe, Jeff Meier of rural Monroe, Carol (Darryl) Leistiko of Monroe and Donna (Howard) Doubler of Warren, IL; grandchildren, Brenda Foley, Jason and Ryan Leistiko, Traci Lacari, Jennifer, Andrew and Nathan Meier, Stacy Anderson, Lindsay Kent, Shawn and Brice Doubler, Jeremy Meier, Brittney Meier Cox, Bethany Meier, Jessica Phillips, Justin Phillips and Bailie Meier, also 20 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents; husband, Clarence; brother, Harold Burkhalter; sister, Marie Carpenter; great-grandson, Conner Lee Meier.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in South Wayne, with Pastor Dennis Perger officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in South Wayne. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe.
