JANESVILLE - Robert S. DeVoe, age 88, of Janesville, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Janesville. He was born on October 25, 1919 in Clarno, Wisconsin, the son of Sylvester and Grace (Kleckner) DeVoe. He married Betty Jane Walmer on April 26, 1941 in Dubuque, Iowa. She passed away on June 18, 1998.
Robert was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran, entering the service on October 31, 1942 in Milwaukee and honorably discharged as Sergeant on January 12, 1946. He had owned and operated DeVoe's Garage in Brodhead, Wisconsin, farmed near Orfordville, Footville, Albany, and Brodhead before moving to Janesville in 1956. He was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Janesville, also was active with Boy Scouts of America for 49 years, representing Troop 506 and Pack 521 of Janesville.
Bob was a member in good standing of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 197, Janesville and an avid camper who made many friends along the way. His BSA awards earned; Lifetime Achievement, RSVP Award, District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, Vigil for Order of the Arrow, Distinguished Unit Leader, as well as numerous individual appreciations.
He is survived by three daughters, Nancy (David) Massey, St. Four Seasons, MO, Dianne (Stephen) Peters, Janesville, Connie (Robert) Tessmer, Moore, ID; a son, Robert W. (Peggy) DeVoe, New Auburn, WI; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Sanford DeVoe; a sister, Geneva Buttke; and a grandson, Bradley Helmeid.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Janesville, with Pastors James Schwarz and Bruce Gray officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, with military rites. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Janesville, and 10:30 a.m. Thursday until time of services at the church. The D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, is assisting the family.
