Phillip Rose, age 74 entered Eternal Life on Sunday June 26, 2011 after battling colon cancer. Phil was born in Baltimore, MD. At the age of 10, his family moved to Columbus, WI. Following graduation from Columbus High School in 1956, he joined the Air Force and served in the US Air Reserve as an engine mechanic for 12 years earning the rank of Staff Sgt. Phil became a journeyman meat cutter and worked as a meat retailer, meat cutter and meat manager at Kohl's Foods for many years. He retired in 1997. During retirement, he worked as a teacher's aid in Belleville for one year and then worked part time in the dairy department at Roy's Market in New Glarus for Jon and Judy Ziltner. In 2004, he retired again and he and Arlyn became snowbirds, dividing their time between Presque Isle, WI and Naples, FL.
Phil's hobbies included fishing, fly tying, making fishing lures, gardening and reading. (He especially enjoyed historical fiction.) Phil was an avid Packers backer and in recent years had become a fan of VA Tech Hokies. He was a past member and past President of the New Glarus Lions and present member of Presque Isle Lions. Phil volunteered to help charitable organizations, however his most gratifying job as a volunteer was listening to Laura Eicher's first graders read at New Glarus Elementary School.
As a snowbird, he was an associate member of Faith Lutheran Church in Naples, FL and Trinity Lutheran Church in Boulder Junction, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmont and Eleanor Rose of Columbus, WI.
He is survived by his sister Ellen (Henry) Forbes of Cottage Grove, WI and the following family members. Phil was the beloved husband of Arlyn Rose, Loving father of Scott (Traci) rose of Columbus, WI; Dawn (Buddy) Fennell of Grand Junction, CO; Wade (Kathryn) Williams of Madison, WI; Wendy (Mike) Gentry of Blacksburg, VA and proud Grandfather of Angela, Jacob, Christopher, and Samantha Rose; Megan, Caitlin, Kelsi, and Logan Donahue and Roy Christopher Gentry and by two great grandchildren, Cole and Sophia Rose.
The joy of life that Phil exuded was infectious. He brightened our days with his smile and humor. Throughout his six year battle with cancer, he showed much courage and was an inspiration to all of us. The answer to his frequently asked question, "Did you miss me?" is affirmative. Yes, we will truly miss him.
