Neal O. Manthei

Neal O. Manthei, 84, formerly of Freeport, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008, at Angelus Retirement Center in Monroe, Wisconsin. Neal was born April 23, 1923 in Dakota, Illinois, the son of Herman and Harriet (Hively) Manthei. He married Verna Schultz on November 1, 1947 in Lena, Illinois. She passed away May 6, 2004.

A World War II Army Air Corp. veteran, he served in the European theatre from March 1943 to October 1945.

Mr. Manthei was a longtime Freeport area carpenter. He later worked for Bruni-Miller Home Builders in Monroe, Wisconsin.

He was a former member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Freeport and a current member of Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe. He was a member of the AMVETS and V.F.W. He enjoyed traveling and wood working.

Surviving him in death are two sons, Gary N. (Barbara) Manthei of Monroe, and Gerry Manthei of Alexander, VA; one brother, Glenn (Marge) Manthei of Shannon, IL; and one sister, June Erdman of Miami, FL; two grandchildren, Christopher (Semiha) Manthei of San Ramon, CA. and Kimberly (Erik) Ammon of Burlington, WI; and two great-grandsons, Tristan Ammon and Reece Ammon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, one sister, and a great-grandson, Logan Ammon.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Visitation will be from 4 till 7 p.m. Thursday evening in Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. A memorial has been established in his name.
