MONROE - A Monroe man was sentenced to four years probation after he pleaded no contest Dec. 16 in Green County Circuit court to sexual assault charges.
Joseph M. Van Matre, 20, pleaded no contest to two counts of causing a child to expose herself, sexual intercourse with a juvenile, fourth-degree sexual assault and contributing to the delinquency of a child, all class A misdemeanors. The charges resulted from a July 28, 2007, incident in Monroe with two girls, one 16 years old and the other 15.
He faced more than three years in jail and up to $50,000 in fines.
Van Matre originally was charged with sexual assault of a child, two counts of second-degree sexual assault, all class C felonies, and sexual intercourse with a child, a class A misdemeanor. He originally faced more than 120 years in prison and up to $310,000 in fines.
