Merlyn L. Gordee Sr.

Age 84 of South Wayne died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Community Living Home in Monroe. Merlyn was born May 7, 1925 on Dog Hollow Road in Jordan Township, Green County, the son of Alfred and Theresa (Amelong) Gordee.

He graduated from Monroe High School in 1942 and attended Madison Business College. Merlyn and Gloria Thompson were married on September 13, 1947 at the Jordan Lutheran Church.

He worked for Union Electric Company in St. Louis before returning to the family farm in Jordan Township. He retired in 1988 and moved to Radisson, WI where they had a cabin on the Chippewa Flowage. They returned to South Wayne in 1998 due to declining health.

Merlyn was a lifelong member of Jordan Lutheran Church where he held many positions and was a longtime treasurer of the cemetery committee. He drove school bus for the Blackhawk district for 12 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pinochle and was a member of the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Gordee of South Wayne; five children, LaVerne (Margaret) Gordee of Monroe, Lois (Chet) Smith of St. Peters, MO, Bruce (Sallee) Gordee, Beth (Gary) Luhman, all of Browntown, and Mary (David) Ellingson of Monroe; 16 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Bell of Darlington, and Jean (Howard) Hodel of Verona; a brother, James (Geraldine) Gordee of Monroe; a sister-in-law, Lois Gordee of Monroe; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Gordee.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., at the Jordan Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Perger officiating. Interment will follow in the Jordan Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Merlyn's name.
