Max C. Hillary, age 90, of Monroe, died on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on April 21, 1926 in Benton, WI, the son of Harry and Eva (Halsey) Hillary. He graduated from Benton High School. Max and Lois "Betty" Butts were united in marriage on November 6, 1949 in Dubuque, IA.

Many will remember him as "that tall nice man that worked at Penney's". Max had many talents; he was a wonderful handyman from remodeling, painting, to refinishing furniture. He enjoyed gardening and the outdoors, and was a good cook. The most important thing in his life was his family; he adored his grandchildren and was a big part of their lives.

Max is survived by his wife, Betty of Monroe; children, Trudy (Rodney) Westerman of Monroe, Candy (Mark Anderson) Hillary of La Crosse, Eva (Dave) Brookhiser of Janesville; brother, Dale Hillary of Galena, IL; two grandchildren, Ryan Berg and Tiffany Thorp; three great-grandchildren, Katie and Ethon Berg, and Livia Thomas; and one great-great-grandchild, Addilynn Fisher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers, Dempsey, Merle, Jack, Ken, James, Donald, and Robert; and 3 sisters, Jeanette Watkins, Arlene Pulver, and Grace Larson.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Special thanks for the wonderful care and support Dad and our family received from Pleasant View Nursing Home the past 2 1â"2 years, especially all those from the View.
