Mathilda "Tillie" Swanson, age 91, of Monroe, formerly of South Wayne, died on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Graceland Manor. She was born on August 19, 1926 in rural South Wayne, the daughter of Frank and Ella (Rahberger) Wehinger. She graduated from South Wayne High School and Platteville Teachers College. She taught country school for one year.
Mathilda and Robert Swanson were united in marriage on June 5, 1947 in Gratiot.
Mathilda farmed with her husband on the family farm for 31 years.
She was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church; where she helped and coordinated funeral luncheons and she was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church in South Wayne.
She helped with Apostolate to the Handicap and was a volunteer worker at St. Clare Hospital with over 8,500 hours donated. She also donated her time with the bloodmobile.
In her spare time she was an avid quilter, making quilts for many and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Roberta (Eugene) Haldiman of South Wayne; grandchildren: Michael, Stephen, and Aaron (Kristine) Haldiman; five great-grandchildren: Jon, Kyle, Seth, Matthew and Makenzie; brother, Constant (Karen) Wehinger of Monroe; sisters, LuAnn (Karl) Krahenbuhl, Odelia (Sam) Nafzger and Caroline Seffrood all of Monroe.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert; sisters, Frances Mitchell, Marion Hartwig and Josephine Goodman; and brother, Carl.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at St. John's Catholic Church in South Wayne, with Fr. Sudhakar Devarapu as celebrant and Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl, co-celebrant. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery in South Wayne.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 3rd, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral home in Monroe. Condolences may be sent to the family at: shriner111.com.
