BELLEVILLE/NEW GLARUS - Marvin Laverne "Buddy" Zweifel, age 85 died at the Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe, WI on November 5, 2013. He was born June 10, 1928, on a farm in Montrose Township, Dane County, WI, the son of Maria Magdalena Elmer and Walter E. Zweifel. Marvin graduated from Montrose Grade School and Belleville High School. He was inducted into the US Army on November 26, 1954. He drove caterpillars and graders at Ft. Leonardwood, MO, then Camp Stewart, Georgia, where with the buddy system, one person chopped a tree with an ax while the other stood guard for gators and snakes. Marvin pushed 80 acres of trees that summer as he operated a bulldozer. His unit was then shipped to England. Marvin drove Jeep 11 months for the Company Commander. He earned Specialist 3rd Class Tech Sergeant on April 30, 1956. He also received a good conduct medal. While in England, he traveled to other European countries. He especially enjoyed making several trips to Switzerland. Marvin was honorably discharged at Ft. Sheridan, IL. Upon his return to Belleville, Marvin farmed with his parents on Walter Road. He maintained the machinery and farm equipment. He drove the tractors and did the field work of planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. Between crops, Marvin spray-painted farm buildings. Winters he worked as assistant electrician with Julius "Duke" Behnke. By the early 1960s Marvin had problems walking. He continued farm work while depending on a walker. He used his arms to pull himself to the seat of his jeep to drive to Belleville or New Glarus for supplies and to pull himself onto a tractor to do the field work. He didn't give up driving tractors until 2001. After fracturing a hip during a fall, Marvin was no longer able to stand. He became a resident in the New Glarus Home in 2004. His pleasure was listening to Swiss music on the Monroe radio station. He loved to talk and enjoyed the visits of relatives, friends, and neighbors. Marvin enjoyed the attention of the nurses, aides, and therapists. He enjoyed talking with other residents and especially enjoyed the dogs brought in by Roy and Suzy Blair.
