MONROE - A 59-year-old Monroe man was charged this week with cashing out his mother's life insurance policy to pay $8,000 in back taxes on his property, while her own taxes went unpaid.
Dan L. Schneider faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of the Class H felony charge of theft. The criminal complaint against him was filed in Green County Circuit Court on Tuesday, March 19.
Schneider allegedly wrote the check to the Green County Treasurer's Office on his mother's account without her permission on Dec. 30, 2011. The payment avoided a foreclosure on his Monroe Township home at N1876 Wisconsin 69.
The investigation into Schneider began when relatives came to Monroe police last July with concerns that he was neglecting his 80-year-old mother and draining her bank account for his own use.
A social worker who visited the mother concluded she "is clearly in need of intervention." In the report, the social worker notes the mother was wearing "shabby" clothes and had lapsed medication prescriptions, ill-fitting shoes, sores on her body from not bathing and filthy bed sheets that likely hadn't been laundered in years.
The mother is diagnosed with significant dementia. Schneider is her only child, according to court records.
Schneider is scheduled to make his first appearance in court April 15. State court records show no prior criminal history for him.
