Magnhild "Mugs" Nybroten, age 100 of Monroe, WI, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the New Glarus Nursing Home in New Glarus, WI. She was born on February 10, 1908 in Adams township, WI, the daughter of Anton and Dorthea (Bratrud) Nybroten. Mugs was baptized and confirmed at Adams Lutheran Church. She graduated from rural Meadow Brook School and in 1928 from Argyle High School. Mugs attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, graduating in 1930. Upon her graduation she taught in Belview, MN, for several years. Later, she attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. Mugs served as a missionary teacher and taught French and English in Fort Daughin, Madagascar from 1936 to 1966. Her first furlough occurred during World War II and it took her eleven months to get home. During her second furlough in 1956 she studied French at the University of Minnesota and later that same year at the Alliance Francaise in Paris, France. During each furlough she spoke in many churches throughout the Midwest, on behalf of the mission program. Mugs returned to the Midwest in 1966 and spent several years caring for her mother, Dorthea Nybroten, in Argyle, WI. After her mother's death, she taught school in Corona, CA from 1973 to 1976. She retired to Minneapolis, MN and resided with her sister and brother-in-law, Geneva and Otto Rystad. She was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

Mugs was the last living relative of a family of eighteen children and was very proud of her Norwegian family and upbringing. She was preceded in death by her sisters: Klara Walden, Geneva Rystad, Agnes Foesch, and Borghild Nybroten; her brothers: Casper, Oscar, Victor, Burnette, Carl and Borgfin Nybroten.

Orphaned in 1911, nephews and nieces of Dorthea's brother, Oscar, Louis, Bennie, Anna and Hulda Rood, were now included in their family. Five years later with the death of her sister, their family grew again to include Buelah, Orville and Julian Rear. Mugs is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

At Mugs' request, she has donated her body to science. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Erickson Funeral Home in Argyle is serving the family. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com

For those who prefer, memorials may be given to Adams Cemetery Association, Adams Sunday School or Argyle Historical Association.
