John D. Hartwig, age 82 of Monroe, Wisconsin, died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at U.W. Hospitals in Madison. He was born November 22, 1925 at Freeport, Illinois, the son of Will E. and Lena (Kuhnke) Hartwig and attended Jordan Prairie School.
John worked as a cheesemaker for Joe Birk at Juda, WI, until his marriage to Janet L. Stauffacher on February 4, 1951 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe. They farmed for over 17 years in Clarno Township and then moved to Monroe in 1967. John then enjoyed working for Gempler Tire in Monroe and for Thermo Vue Manufacturing from 1985 until retiring in 2006. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe and former member of Green County Farm Bureau. John loved the outdoors - hunting, fishing, helping his wife in the garden, and spending time with his grandsons and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Janet L. Hartwig of Monroe; sons, Kenneth (Barb) Hartwig of Janesville, and Robert (Marcia) Hartwig of Janesville; daughter, Christine A. Hartwig of Minneapolis, MN; grandsons, Brian, Jim, Paul and Mark Hartwig; great-grandchildren, Reba, Ashley, Julia, Scott, Collin, Jacob, Matthew, Kaylee, Kaitlyn and Alyvia; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Ruth (Tom) Goetz.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at ST. JOHN'S UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST in Monroe with the Rev. Gretchen Sylvester officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.
Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
A memorial fund is being established for St. John's Church in John's memory.
