Irene C. Schafer, age 95 of Brodhead, died Friday, July 5, 2013 at Collinwood assisted living. She was born on April 21, 1918 in River Forest, Illinois; the daughter of Fred and Lydia (Hoehne) Fiene. She married Fred Schafer on June 26, 1948 in Forest Park, Illinois.
Irene had worked in sales at Wieboldts stores for many years and after retirement, she and Fred enjoyed many happy years at their cabin on Bass Lake in Chetek, WI with family and friends. Irene was a bird watcher, crafter, people person and faithful believer and one of her favorite sayings was "sweet memories are the paradise of our mind." She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brodhead.
She is survived by nephews, Donald (Bonnie) Heidorn of River Forest, IL; James (Carolyn) McGowan and family of Lombard, IL; great nephew, Martin Heidorn of Anderson, IN; great niece, Holly (John) Schafer of Arlington Heights, IL; niece, Lorraine Shaw of Elmhurst, IL; and great-great niece and nephews, Maura, Jack, and William Schafer; special friends, Dianne Sedbrook and Delores Hockmuth, of Brodhead and many other friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, and 2 brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brodhead, with Pastor Peder Johanson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Brodhead. A visitation will be held Saturday, from 11:00 am, until the time of service, at the church. Memorials may be given in Irene's name to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Everson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
