Herman A. Spani, age 83 of Monroe, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born May 28, 1925 in Blue Mounds, WI, the son of Alois and Martha (Buholtz) Spani. He attended Blanchardville area schools.

Herman married Vivian Nyborg on January 11, 1946 in Blanchardville. He served in the U.S. Army from December 9, 1943 to March 30, 1946 as a Tank Crewman. He served as a member of the 13th Armored Division. As a member of a medium M-4-3 tank division, serving as a driver, was responsible for all necessary maintenance and repair work on engine and accessories. Served in the States and the ETO. Herman was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, with 2 bronze stars, 1 overseas service bar and Good Conduct Medal. He farmed in the Blanchardville area, was a LCL Truck Driver, worked for Etter's Floor Covering and Dry Good's Store and later purchased the business until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of St. Victor's Catholic Church, life member of Zilmer Riley VFW Post #2312, and was on the Monroe Fire Dept. for 20 years, member of Monroe Fire Dept. Alumni until his death. Herman enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Surviving is his wife, Vivian Spani of Monroe; daughters, Joann (Gary) Goecks of Juda, Donna (Ronald) Briggs, of Monroe, Linda (Tom) Bacher, of Freeport, IL, Kathy (Duane) Kubly, of Monroe; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Adeline Gahwiler; brother, Joseph Spani; and son-in-law, Gary Goecks.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at St. Victor's Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Fr. Michael E. Klarer. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Monroe, with military rites accorded.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE FUNERAL HOME, 1455 Mansion Drive and 18th Avenue in Monroe, WI.
