Helen Hefty, 92 of Monroe passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at her home at St. Clare Friedensheim in Monroe. Helen was born January 31, 1921, in New York to Samuel and Cecelia Zimmerman.
Helen enlisted in the WACs (Women's Army Corps) in 1944 where she met her husband William (Bud) Hefty. They were married March 3, 1945 and lived in Rice Lake, Wl at the family farm until moving to Madison in 1953. Together they raised four children in their home on West Badger Road. Helen worked at Oscar Mayer for 25 years. She and Bud retired early, moving back to Rice Lake and wintering in New Port Richey, Florida for many years where they made many good friends. After Bud's death in 1994, Helen moved to Monroe. She lived for many years at Churchill Apts and has lived at St. Clare Friedensheim since December. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church in Monroe and the VFW in Mikana, Wl. Helen is a veteran and flew on the Badger Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2011 which was a true highlight for her.
Helen is survived by her loving children Susan Meier of Monroe, Rachel (Greg) Seffrood of Monroe, Edward (Charlene) Hefty of Oregon and Bert (Laurel) Hefty of Albany. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Cynthia McKeown of Monroe, Robin McKeown of Madison, Andy Meier of Blue Mounds, Jaime (Corey) King of Oregon, Jessica (Jeffrey) Hrubes of Oregon, Jennifer Seffrood of Huntington Beach, CA, Daniel Hefty of Oregon, Zachary Hefty of Albany and Melanie (Josh) Reed of DeKalb, IL, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Bud, parents and siblings in New York and Hefty in-laws in Wisconsin.
The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Clare Friedensheim for the wonderful care they gave Helen, and a special thanks to the Hospice nurses, Lisa and Jody, who helped make Helen's final days peaceful.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2502 23rd Avenue, Rice Lake, Wl 54868 where Helen and Bud are lifetime members. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery where Helen will be laid to rest with her husband Bud. ln lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Monroe Clinic Hospice. Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
