Hazel J. Schlafli, age 93 of rural Argyle, WI passed away Monday, December 5, 2016 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, WI. She was born in Argyle Township on February 24, 1923 the daughter of Frank and Pearl (Anderson) Nall and lived in the Argyle area most of her life. She was united in marriage to Otto A. Kuenzi on April 12, 1941 and moved to New Glarus, WI. Otto died in 1944 while serving his country during World War II in the battle of the Hurtgen Forest in Germany. Upon his death she returned to Argyle to take care of her grandmother and has resided there since. She later married August Schlafli, Jr. on June 12, 1948 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington, WI. Hazel and August owned and operated the Free Silver Cheese Factory in the Red Rock area near Darlington and later moved to rural Argyle where they farmed until 1990.
Hazel is survived by her four children: Laurel (Richard Kundert) Jones of New Glarus, WI, Nate (Diana Gutzmer) Schlafli, Jim (Rhonda) Schlafli, and Gwenn (Steve) Fischer all of Argyle, 14 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband August, Jr. in 1990; one son: August "Butch" Schlafli III in 1970; one grandson: Joshua Fischer in infancy; four brothers: Matthew, Howard, Clinton, and Buddy Nall; two sisters: Lillian Heller and Betty Nall; and her son-in-law: Tom Jones.
Hazel was a Charter Member of Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Argyle and its Women's Missionary Federation and was a member and past president of Argyle American Legion Auxiliary #251. Hazel loved staying busy taking care of her family, working around the farm and maintaining her home. She cherished the time she spent with her family creating memories that will stay with them forever. Hazel will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Cornerstone Lutheran Church (1540 Old Highway 81, Argyle) with Rev. Ron Brubakken officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in rural Argyle. A visitation will be held Friday, December 9, 2016 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. on Saturday at Cornerstone Lutheran Church.
