Harriet E. Rowe, age 81 of Darlington, WI, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Monroe Hospital Clinic in Monroe, WI. She was born August 22, 1926 in Darlington, WI, the daughter of William C. and Frances E. (Lillie) Paynter. Harriet graduated from Darlington High School in 1944 and from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1968 with a degree in elementary education. She was united in marriage to Donald W. Rowe on December 30, 1947 at Darlington United Methodist Church. Harriet and Donald farmed most of their married life in Lafayette County. She taught in several rural schools in the area, three years in Darlington Grade School and the Blackhawk School District for 30 years. After retiring, Harriet did substitute teaching in Blackhawk and Darlington School Districts.

Harriet is survived by three children, Rita Rowe of Lena, IL, Barbara (Karl) Dersch of Madison, WI and Tom (Leila) Rowe of South Wayne, WI; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Whalen of Darlington and Merville Hillery of Belmont, WI; two sisters-in-law, Marian Paynter of Darlington and Gloria Sargent of Shullsburg, WI; many nieces, nephews and cousins; extended family, Dan and Linda (Truckenmiller) Krum, and Peter and Cole Krum, all of Freeport, IL; three grandchildren, Kathy Dersch, Jon Rowe and Eric Rowe. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on March 2, 2000; one son, John in 1976; two brothers, John and Gordon Paynter; two sisters, Margaret Whalen and Ruth Hillery.

Harriet was a member of Darlington United Methodist Church. She enjoyed going downtown for breakfast most mornings with her friends. Harriet very seldom missed going to church and joining friends for coffee at Subway after church. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Darlington United Methodist Church with Rev. Brenda Whitford of Centenary United Methodist Church of Shullsburg officiating. Burial will be at Union Grove Cemetery, Darlington. A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington.
