Hans R. Schlapbach, age 86 of Albany died at his home on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 with his family by his side. Hans was born on the Schlapbach homestead near Schlapbach Creek on May 4, 1924 in the Town of Springdale, WI., the son of Adolph and Emilie "Bertha" (Stocker) Schlapbach. He entered the U.S. Navy on Dec. 20, 1944 and served for two years attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. Following his honorable discharge on June 16, 1946, Hans returned to Green County where he made cheese for two years. Hans and Helen Thalmann were married on Feb. 7, 1948 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe. She preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 1997. He married Dorothy Rupp on Nov. 27, 2005 in Monticello. He established the family farm in Albany Township in 1951 and built Green County's first freestall barn in 1963.

He was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, (church consistory), Albany McDermott Steindorf American Legion Post #144, Albany Historical Society, Green County Farm Bureau, Green County Ag Chest, Albany Thrift Shop Board, and he was a former Tri-State Tourism Ambassador. Hans enjoyed driving his 1967 Firebird in many local parades.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Schlapbach; two sons, Kenneth (Nicki) and Carl Schlapbach (friend Sue Berg), all of Albany; his daughter, Lois (Roger) Flood of Grafton, VA; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Adolph (Elsie) Bach of Fitchburg, WI, and Fritz (Viola) Schlapbach of Albany; one sister, Elizabeth "Liz" Bongard of Lodi, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra Schlapbach; infant son, Albert John; and a sister, Ann Buchel.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello. Rev. Lawrence Balleine will officiate with burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Albany. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in his name.
