Greta Badertscher Knowlton

Greta Badertscher Knowlton, age 96, of Brodhead, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Woods Crossing Nursing Home, Brodhead. She was born on September 28, 1917 in Spring Grove Township, Green County, WI, the daughter of Gottfried and Honora (Garde) Badertscher. She married Richard P. Knowlton in Italy on July 30, 1945. He passed away on August 23, 2006.

Greta graduated from Brodhead High School in 1935 and St. Mary's School of Nursing, Milwaukee, in 1941. Greta was a U.S. Army Captain and nurse during World War II in Northern Africa and Italy. Following her marriage in Italy, she and her husband were stationed in California, Japan, and Virginia.

After their retirement, they moved to Idaho and then to Poulsbo, WA , where they enjoyed square dancing clubs. Greta moved back to Green County in 2007. She enjoyed writing, especially poetry, singing, gardening, traveling, and reading, and practiced the Catholic faith all of her life.

Greta is survived by several nieces, nephews, and a brother-in-law, Walter P. Smiley, Springfield, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, Lucille in 1997 (Henry 1984) Kilmer, Jessie in 2007 (Robert 1975) Kundert, Hettie in 1993 (Robert 1982) Bruni, Mary Smiley in 2011 and a twin brother, Garde in 1983 (Alice 1991) Badertscher.

Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI, with Father Michael Moon officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, with military rites. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
