DODGEVILLE - Glee M. Enright started an amazing life on October 31, 1913 in Baraboo. Her spirit departed her body on September 8, 2009. Glee's parents, June B. Newell and Floyd H. Newell aptly named this daughter Glee Marvel Newell.
Glee graduated from Baraboo High School in 1930 and attended Reedsburg County Normal in 1931 and received her teaching certificate from UW River Falls in 1931.
Glee taught at Kilbourn School near Bloomington, WI for a year and then taught in the Muscoda Schools. While teaching at Muscoda, Glee met her husband, James E. Enright, a Dodgeville optometrist. They were married June 8, 1938. Glee joined Dr. Enright in his practice and became an accomplished paraoptometric. Glee remained at Jim's side, assisting him in all aspects of his practice until his death in 1955. Thereafter, Glee remained associated with the optometric practice and assisted Dr. Lawrence Ketchum when he took over Dr. Enright's practice. Glee was one of the founders of the Wisconsin Paraoptometric Association. She served on its State Board, first as the District Liaison for the Southwest District and between 1979 and 1995 she served as State Secretary, Vice President and President of the WPA. In 1985, Glee was elected to serve as the First Vice Chairman of the National Association of Paraoptometrics. In 1978 she was named the outstanding State Paraoptometric of the Year. In 1988 WPA honored her with a special award for serving as a paraoptometric for 50 years. On April 25, 2009, at the annual WPA meeting, Glee was the honored guest. Glee retired from active work at the Dodgeville Clinic in April, 1989.
Glee had an equally strong devotion to her religion and the Dodgeville United Methodist Church. She served in nearly every position at the church including directing the Youth Choir and Senior Choir Director for 33 years, Handbell Choir after retiring as Choir Director, Kitchen Band organizer and Adult Sunday School Teacher. She was very actively involved in United Methodist Women. Through Dr. Enright's affiliation with the Masonic Order, Glee became active in the Order of the Eastern Star and was recently honored for 70 years of service to this organization. In 1983 she was appointed to the Office of State Organist.
Dr. Enright and Glee enjoyed the love of horses. They frequently appeared in parades featuring their horses, Rosie and Buttercup. Glee and Dr. Enright kept their horses in a large pasture and stable west of their home.
Travel was also a passion Dr. Enright and Glee shared. Trips to Mexico, Arizona and various parts of the United States were enjoyed during their marriage. After Jim's death, Glee traveled extensively throughout the world. Her favorite trips were to the Holy Land, Cuba, to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany, to Hawaii and her final trip to China in 1999.
Despite Glee's constant involvement with service to her patients, church professional organization and Eastern Star, she manage to develop and maintain incredible relationships with her friends and family. In addition to Rosie and Buttercup, her children were the extended family born to her sister, Floyce A. Knoke, and younger brothers, Col. (Ret) Jamieson H.B. Newell and Carroll A. Newell.
Glee hosted Thanksgiving and New Year's at her Dodgeville home for years. She knew and could recite from memory the names of her 35 great nephews and nieces, her 41 great, great nephews and nieces and her 12 great, great, great nephews and nieces. Years ago, Glee initiated an annual family reunion the first Sunday of August at Governor Dodge State Park.
