MONROE - Gerton E. Fowler, age 83, died Friday, April 17, 2009 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born on March 19, 1926 in South Beloit, the son of Everett and Carrie (Burger) Fowler. He attended Brodhead Schools. Gerton served in the Army during WW II, earning the Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal with 1 bronze battle star, 2 Overseas service bars, Army Occupational Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Gerton worked as a police officer in Blanchardville and Monticello for many years; he also worked at the Swiss Colony and managed the Monroe airport, retiring in 1997.

Gerton married Dorothy Jacobson on November 22, 1948 in Rockford, IL; he later married Vivian Church on October 26, 1976 in Monroe and later married Tina Bunnell on January 8, 2009 in Monroe. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Monroe, Past Commander of Brodhead V.F.W. and belonged to the Wisconsin Good Sam Bell Ringers chapter.

He is survived by his wife, Tina of Monroe; 6 children: Jo (Vern) Harris of New Glarus, Jeff (Donna) Fowler of Lodi, Kary Fowler of North Freedom, Jean (Don) Jameson of Mobile, AL, Julie (Mike) Teasdale of Monroe, and Jeri (Dan) Purdue of Brodhead; 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; step-son, Paul (Julie) Bunnell of Monroe; 3 step-grandchildren, 1 step-great-grandchild; a sister, Doris Joranlien and a brother, Bob Fowler, both of Brodhead. Also surviving is his beloved dog, Penny. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clayton Fowler.

A Memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Brodhead, with Reverend Ronald E. Massen officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at a later time. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at the church. A memorial fund is being established in Gerton's name. Everson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
