DAKOTA - Francis Eugene Sughroue, 83, of Dakota, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014 at his home. He was born Dec. 13, 1930 in Rock Run Township, the son of John and Emma (Schopf) Sughroue. On Feb. 27, 1954 he married D. Elaine Lee at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in rural Davis. She preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1992.

Gene graduated from St. Thomas Catholic High School, Rockford in 1948. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Irish Grove rural Davis and the American Legion Post of Pecatonica. Gene loved gardening and then selling his produce. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Bart Sughroue of Dakota, seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; son-in-law, John Hallmark of Columbia, TN; one sister, Jane (Bruce) Banks of Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elaine; daughter, Leah Hallmark; son Bert Sughroue; three sisters, Lois Banks, Mary Ann Lynch and Marcella Hannah; and three brothers, Tom, Don, and Jerome Sughroue. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Dakota. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Irish Grove with Msgr. Eric Barr officiating. Burial will be at the St. Patrick's Cemetery.
