Donald R. "Skip" Thoman, age 76 of Monroe, died on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home with his family by his side. He was born in Washington Township, rural Monticello, WI on March 2, 1933, the son of Walter and Rose (Baertschi) Thoman, and he attended Purcell Grade School.
Donald entered the U.S. Army on June 10, 1954 in Milwaukee. He served in the Korean War as a Construction Machine Operator and later as a Military Police Officer. He was discharged on March 24, 1956, at Fort Sheridan, IL, and he earned the National Defense Service Medal.
Donald married Marie Hull on February 10, 1957 in Orangeville, IL.
Donald farmed with his wife Marie in Clarno Township on the WI-IL border, where they raised their family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Thoman of Monroe; children, Dominick (Kelly) Thoman of Oshkosh, WI., Richard (Jane) Thoman of Monroe, David (Lora) Thoman of Red Lion, PA, Christina (Steve) Owen of Orangeville, IL, Kevin (Debbie) Thoman of Flushing, MI; siblings, June (Paul) Gruenberg of Monroe, Marvin (Gloria) Thoman of Monticello, Allen (Shirley) Thoman of Nekoosa, WI, Glorianne (Robert) Rufenacht of Monroe, Dennis (Linda) Thoman of Monticello and Linda (David) Klemm of Monroe; and 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pauline (Ernest) Krahenbuhl; in-laws, Stanley and Frances Hull.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Monroe Bible Church, 2613 8th Ave. Monroe, WI, with Pastor Matthew Spoonhour officiating. Private burial at Grandview Cemetery in Freeport, IL.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr. and 18th Ave. in Monroe and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the Monroe Bible Church.
