Darrell (Bud) William Cherrey, age 88, of Monroe, passed away at home on June 8th, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Bud was born in New Diggings, Wisconsin to Glen and Ila Cherrey. He spent his childhood years in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. He worked at Civilian Conservation Camp prior to enlisting in the United States Navy in June 1943, as a Naval Corpsman. Bud was a WWII and Korean Conflict veteran. During WWII, he provided medical care to POWs in the Philippines. He deployed with the Marines to Inchon, Korea; again providing medical care to Marines on the front lines. He served his country honorably and with distinction for twenty-three years. After retiring from active duty, Bud continued to serve in the Fleet Reserves until his death. Bud moved his family to Monroe, Wisconsin in 1971. He continued his medical profession as a physician assistant at the Monroe Medical Center until his retirement in 1990. Bud had a strong spirit of volunteerism and donated countless hours as an ambulance driver and Emergency Medical Technician for St. Clare Hospital and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married the love of his life, Carol Kruser, on September 6, 1953. Bud had an infectious sense of humor, a calm inner strength, enormous courage and unwavering integrity. He earned the love and respect of his family, friends and community. He was a member of St. Victor Catholic Church and a life member of V.F.W. Post #2312, American Legion Post # 84, Fleet Reserves, and Monroe Lions Club. Bud is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Ila Cherrey; his sisters, June Cherrey and Carol Lennartz; and his son-in-law Burton Lopez.
He is survived by his loving and devoted spouse, Carol Cherrey; his children, Jan Bennett, Alan (Sandi) Schwandt, Glenda (Lisa Anderson) Cherrey, Sue (Mark) Schwartz, Cyndi (Tim) Dearth, Kaye (Brad) Williams and Michelle Lopez. He is further survived by seventeen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Larry (Ruth) Cherrey; his sister, Marcella (Charles) Russell; sisters-in-law, Olive Ann Kieler, Eloise Hinderman, Donna Mae Reuter, Marie Williamson; brothers-in-law, David (Ruth) Kruser, Ted (Patty) Kruser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church, Monroe, with Father Michael Klarer, Celebrant. The Mass will be followed by military honors and a luncheon at the Monroe Moose Lodge. Burial will be at a later date in the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King, WI. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 13, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given in Bud's name to Monroe Clinic Hospice or the Apostolate to the Handicapped.
